Description: This course will survey the history of architecture and urbanism from the mid-18th century to the 1960's. It will trace the critical shifts in architectural thought and practice that inaugurated, constituted, and questioned architectural modernism. In particular, the course will consider the development of architectural knowledge as the field engaged the great social, cultural, and technological changes of the period. These changes include the rise of: scientific inquiry and its implications for the study of history and aesthetics; nationalism; state institutions; industrialization; new social, economic and political forms; urbanization and suburbanization; the middle class and new audiences for architecture; photography and other media; new transportation technologies; new materials and techniques of construction; and disciplinary professionalization and specialization. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for ARCH 346 if student has credit for ARCH 646.
