Taught in Italian and English, authors considered include Petrarch, Bembo, Ariosto, Tasso, Redi, Metastasio, Goldoni, and Da Ponte, with specific reference to musical poetry.

Description: This course will concentrate on Italian cinema and literature from c1950-present. Topics to be discussed include Neorealism, Feminism, 'Commedia all'italiana', and the Holocaust. Students will begin to express themselves in increasingly elegant written and spoken Italian. This course is supported by resources available through the LRC.
 

ITAL 310 - STARS OF ITALIAN CINEMA

Description: This course will examine some of the most representative films of Italian cinema through the figure of the actress the director has chosen to star in his/her film. Politicians and artists have forged specific ideas about female beauty. Films in particular accomplish this task through the face and the body of the actress who becomes the incarnation of Italy and the embodiment of the cultural, political and historical heritage of a nation and its people. Actresses like Anna Magnani, Silvana Mangano, Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren above all, lent their bodies to a cinematic corpus that became part of the Italian national identity. This course will be conducted in Italian. An advanced knowledge of the language is required. Instructor Permission Required. Recommended Prerequisite: ITAL 309. Repeatable for Credit.
