Description: An overview of environmental health issues including discussion of basic research methods; illnesses caused or exacerbated by environmental exposures; environmental justice; and the role of research in driving effective policies to protect public health. The course includes numerous guest lectures by area researchers, clinicians, and policy makers; a bus tour featuring disproportionately affected neighborhoods, air pollution monitoring stations and "green" initiatives; student presentations on issues of special interest; and critical reading of seminal environmental health studies. Sustainability is one of the great challenges for humans in the 21st century and will be a key consideration in future settlement patterns and engineering design solutions. Description: This course will introduce students to pharmacy policy, as essential aspect of public health. The approval of new medications, the differences between brand name drugs, generic, and over-the-counter drugs is considered along with the "shift movement," (prescription to OTC status). The development, distribution, marketing and consumption of pharmaceuticals are influenced by policy. All aspects of these processes are affected by the pharmaceutical industry, government (the FDA), Congress, insurance companies, pharmacists, hospitals, physicians, consumer representatives and patients. Regulatory issues, controlling the costs, state - federal relationships, cross-border purchases, and the global market for medication are discussed. Normative issues and ethical dilemmas will be discussed. Course taught at the School of Public Health medical Center one mile from Rice University campus; attendance required.

Student-interns will spend up to 10 hours/week at BCM and will be required to submit a written report, evaluations and an example of research products (research posters, abstracts, paper drafts, manuscripts, etc.) both to their supervisor and the Office of the Dean of Social Sciences. Enrollment is limited to Rice undergraduate students who have declared a major within the School of Social Sciences and have been approved for participation in the internship partnership between Rice and BCM. Written approval of the research supervisor and the Dean of Undergraduates must be received by the Office of the Dean of Social Sciences at least 2 weeks prior to the start of classes. Department Permission Required.
